Artist's Statement

i strive to find the essence of a subject through the use of strong color ... i don't try to reproduce a subject, just my perception of it ... since i love to experiment with color and technique, i haven't adopted a "style" just yet ... one day i'll produce my perfect painting - the one i see in my head -i'm still working on it

it has been said by the immortal georgia o'keefe that "if i could say it, i wouldn't have to paint it ... "  as such, i will use the words of a friend, gary goldstein, an artist with words, to describe my work - somehow my paintings allowed him to look into my soul and see all that i wish to be:

"pene diMaio is a painter who likes to play.  her landscapes veer into impressionistic sensuality with emphatic lines and bold colors, currents of vibrant texture that play with the eye as well as the imagination.  nature never looks like this and yet it seems just right - intimate and vaguely familiar like a touch of deja vu or the fleeting memory of a dream.  ms diMaio's work resonates with this feeling, like a tuning fork vibrating at a pleasing pitch.

"being playful is different than simply fooling around - every canvas is a clear vision, authoritatively stated.  one is easily convinced by her firm belief - every color and stroke is exactly the way they were meant to be.   the effect is one of distillation, clarity and sometimes a wink at the viewer lest they take it all too seriously.

"yes, pene dimaio is a serious artist who likes to play - and she does with a delightful consistency as she tinkers with our perceptions and preconceptions through the magic of color and light, with the joy that is her vision."
