painting
is for me, very much like raising children;
some of them are a pure joy and
they don’t surprise me when they work so well.
others,
the more difficult ones, often give me headaches and don’t go quite in
the direction i planned for them ...
but
i have often been amazed how these “difficult” paintings (&
children?) touch certain
people –
almost
as if they were created just for them!
consequently,
i try not to judge –
i
trust the work to tell me when it is finished and ready to go out in the
world …
even
when i don’t agree at all!
but,
just as each of my children has found their purpose - often despite me -
i
believe that each of my paintings will find their place as long as i
trust.
to
foster this belief daily, i
post this wonderful quote by martha graham in my studio:
“…
there is only one of you in all time,
this expression is unique, and if
you block it,
it will … be lost. no
artist is pleased.
there is
no satisfaction whatever at any time…
there is only a queer, divine
dissatisfaction …
... a blessed unrest….”
